Baby BOY nursery bliss

Baby boy nursery

If you’ve been keeping a close eye on my Insta lately you might have seen some sneak peeks of a blissful boy nursery we just finished up. Our client was expecting her third little man, so this wasn’t mama’s first rodeo and the ‘bones’ of the nursery were already in place with some key pieces she already had – a crib and feeding chair that had been used in the nurseries of her two older boys. For both sentimental and practical reasons, she wanted to use these for the new room too. Our brief was to create a calming space with fresh a fresh colour palette and a touch of whimsy.

Our starting point was the accent wall for the cot – a tile herringbone wallpaper by Milton and King that we’ve used before and love, complimented by a Ila Y Ela Raffia Lion head from Martin and Ella. This wall had an alcove towards the one side that we transformed into a built in cabinet for additional storage and open shelves to display books and cute accessories. The balance of the walls were painted as a colourblock, also something we have used a lot lately, but there is honestly no easier or more cost effective way to give a space some instant character. We used Skylight and Exhale both from Jotun. Exhale is part of the 2020 Lady Collection and this new shade on the block is ticking all the right boxes, a real pastel beauty that brings a sense of calm to the room as the name suggests.

A special piece of artwork from our client’s own childhood room made for a perfect pop of ‘colour and fun in the space. We love adding a vintage or quirky ‘odd piece’ to any room design and this one happened to be perfect. We also added some adorable baby animal prints in the passage entry area.

You’ll no doubt recognise the custom-made dresser that multi-functions as a changing station as we’ve used this in so may nursery designs over the past year (See it here, here and here) – every time in a different colour, and with varying widths that suit each space. We love it’s flexibility and streamlined design and we have to credit Linda Dekkers of LiveLoudGirl for inspiring what’s become somewhat of a House of Hawkes staple. We experimented with another new Jotun colour for this one, Serene Blue, a beautiful dusty tone.

The grey daybed was a fabulous find at an amazing price point from Pan Emirates (so good, I bought one for myself!) and the installation of a new wooden floor from Nordic Homeworx (installed directly over the existing tiles) really elevated the room to a new level. Last but not least to soften those baby falls, we chose a soft chunky handwoven rug from The Loom Collection and a selection of cute accessories from Big Stuffed, H&M Home, Ooh Noo, and Fabelab, to name a few.

We are thrilled with the end result of this cozy, textured and peaceful yet modern nursery, we would love to hear your feedback.

  • On a scale of wardrobe envy from 1 to 10, I'm clocking 25 as I witness the first installation of @fronteriors cane doors for PAX wardrobe frames at a client's home. I think we have reached #ikeahack level 100!

  • Happy National Day to the UAE!
This beautiful country has been our home and playground for 14 years. When we first arrived, we partied at Scarlet’s in Emirates Towers and spent weekends at the beach, often watching touch rugby on the open beach area (that is now the gardens of the Westin). I had the pleasure and privilege of working for the formable powerhouse that is @thenfd at The Grooming Company, during a time when she was pioneering the grooming industry in this region. Springs townhouses were just being handed over, there were only a handful of completed buildings in the Marina and JLT was an architectural plan. The Burj Khalifa was rising from foundation level, there was no Terminal 3, no Downtown Dubai, no Canal, no Business Bay crossing, no Salik tolls or any Metro lines to be seen. The old Garhoud bridge was a three lane affair that would bring traffic to it’s knees and closed to allow large vessels to pass. We feel really lucky to have seen this incredible city grow and develop to the iconic destination it is today.
We’ve had our ups & downs, but overall, this country has been amazingly good to us. Both our babies were born here and no matter where we might land one day, this will always be ‘home’ in their hearts.
PS: these pictures were taken by @nateleecocks sometime last year in the midst of a full-blown sandstorm. Nat, I’m still chuckling at the fact that we just carried on regardless!
After this bit of Dubai nostalgia, i forgot to mention something and now I’d really LOVE to hear from anyone who also remembers when @ikeauae was a small retail outlet in Deira City Centre mall!?? #UAEnationalday #spiritofthenation #mydubai #itsbeenawhile

  • It's such fun having our @fronteriors cabinets to play with in the new studio. We tried this new combination of beige slatted doors with black hardware and it's a beauty - particularly in front of the marmorino wall by @jotunpaintsarabia | Swipe through to get a closer look. This cabinet is built using 2 x BESTA 60x128 frames that are screwed together and supported on a custom leg frame. Add 2 x slatted doors, 2 x sides, 1 x top, 2 x handles and.... voila!

  • Throwback to sleepy mornings in South Africa this past summer, which of course was winter over there. And now its starting to feel much the same over here. Switching ACs off and opening the doors and windows feels like a re-awakening after Dubai's looooong summer! Anyone else loving this time of year?
