The Animal Print Shop by Sharon Montrose

27/03/2014

Wow, it’s Thursday again. It’s been a quiet week on the blog thanks to a few of other projects that have me spinning like a hamster on a wheel in the background here. I hope yours has been a good one so far.

Today’s topic is nursery decor – something that is, very sadly, almost all gone in our home. My daughter will need to upgrade to a ‘big girl’ bed soon and with that, all traces of her baby room will no doubt be gone. Sob. But for anyone who’s yet to embark on this fun adventure, it seems criminal not to introduce you to Sharon Montrose’s Animal Print Shop. I only wish I had known of this woman’s truly incredible work five years ago.

DIY: Painted African baskets

24/02/2014

Since living away from home, I seem to have some sort of subliminal urge to incorporate bits of Africa into my decor. I guess its partly a comfort thing but it also has a lot to do with my love of textures and an appreciation for the unique and irregular nature of handmade items. Woven baskets are an absolute favorite of mine, not only for practical storage purposes but also as wall art. When displayed as ‘art’, these…

A touch of teal: Dulux color of the year 2014

22/02/2014

Dulux predicted teal as the color of choice for 2014. A stark contrast to Pantone’s Colour of the Year, Radiant Orchid. I have to admit that I find myself firmly rooted in the Dulux camp on this one. Teal is by far a more refreshing color. According to Dulux, it “combines the natural harmony of green with the tranquility of blue to symbolize balance”, and I concur. Teal, or ‘Sea Urchin 1’, the precise shade specified by Dulux, combines beautifully…

Style file: Antlers

19/02/2014

Considering my dislike of traditional taxidermy, I have a rather contradictory crush on antlers. The use of antlers (real and faux) as decor accessories is nothing new, they have been increasing in popularity for some time now, moving beyond the stereotype hunting lodges and into stylish homes of all genres. Admittedly, it took some for me to fully embrace the trend, but now that I am on board, I can’t help but love the versatile use of antlers…

She makes our world a whole lot nicer…

14/09/2013

My daughter came into this world on the morning of 3 July 2010, and she really has been making our world a whole lot nicer since that day. I saw a quote to this effect on a scatter cushion and thought that it would make a really cute print for wall art in a nursery or kids bedroom. There were so many options for the ‘main’ word in the quote. I considered ‘making this world a whole lot…

DIY Kids inspirational poster

01/09/2013

I have seen so many of these inspirational posters around and I think they are a great option for wall art in kids rooms and family areas. I decided to make one for my son’s room, which was needing a little something on a blank bit of wall.  Putting the design together was relatively simple but deciding how to display it was a whole separate mission. It’s not often that I grapple with indecision in the realms of…

  • Peeps, theres a new edition of our popular Scene & Heard series on the blog today. An intentionally short and sweet feature dedicated to sharing ad hoc snippets of cool things that have caught our eye on the interiors and lifestyle scene, this month's post includes some great new retail discoveries as well as news from old favourites, like the new print collection from @mydeernl - find it on houseofhawkes.com by following the link in my bio.

  • I caught Kaitlyn dancing in the flower crown that I wore to last night's party. The series of snaps that I managed to catch are mostly blurry but I love them.
