Our Holiday Home reveal : Part 1 The kitchen

10/09/2018

Remember that holiday apartment we bought in South Africa earlier this year? Well, it’s all renovated, furnished and ready for it’s big reveal. If you follow me on Instagram, you no doubt feel like you’ve had the full tour already. Perhaps you caught all the ‘behind the scenes’, ‘under the scenes’ and ‘knee deep in renovation scenes’ too? In case you missed all of that action, you can see a good chunk of it on my Instagram story highlights called ‘holiday home’.

If you followed the journey of this remote (Dubai – Durban) renovation endeavour and the subsequent ‘first visit’ cum furnishing and decorating expedition, then thanks for sticking around and keeping me company. I loved all the comments and encouragement I received along the way and I’m excited to show you the the end results. Given that there’s a lot to show you, I’m going to deliver the room reveals in a series.

Before I proceed, I have to give a big shout-out to the team who helped get us to this point. We were very lucky to have found a contractor, who not only has the patience of a saint, but also subscribes to a level of detail and perfection that you don’t often find in the field. He also rounded up a team of fantastic sub-contractors who are clearly on his ‘approved’ list with good reason. Please see the resources list at the end of this post for all their info.

I shared the plans for our kitchen in this post earlier in the year and as mentioned therein, the space was in pretty good shape when we got it so it didn’t need a full overhaul (also read as I couldn’t justify the spend on the new counter tops that I REALLY wanted), and as such, we decided to embrace the bones of it and keep the existing cabinet structure and worktops.

To make it look like new, we replaced all the cabinet doors with newly painted ones and reconfigured the wall units above the sink and added floating shelves. Taking what felt like a huge risk at the time, we decided to try black cabinets based on the reasoning that a holiday home was the ideal place to try something a little out of my usual white comfort zone and I am so glad I did. We are really thrilled with the outcome and I can’t recommend Shaun from The Cool Kitchen Company enough.

The colour that we picked for the cabinetry is called Canon by Paintsmiths – it’s actually not quite black, but more of a deep charcoal. The dark tone contracts beautifully with the light wood look vinyl tiles that run throughout the interior of the apartment. Aside of the new cupboard doors, flooring and a new tap at the sink, we didn’t change anything else in the kitchen.

Here’s a look at some of the before and afters.

If you’d like to see a ‘shop the look’ series for the apartment, please let me know in the comments section below.

In the meantime, here’s the list of companies we worked with for the renovation:

Main contractor – Jarrod Dyer from Gator Projects
Kitchen and all cabinetry – Shaun du Toit from The Cool Kitchen Company
Electrical – Dean Knezovich from Ecolight Electrical
Plumbing – Richard Tirrell from Concept Plumbing
Vinyl flooring – Greg Veale from Concept Carpets & Flooring
Cement flooring – Donavan Harvey from Creative Painting & Floors

Stay tuned for part 2 of this series later in the week.

I like that you closed the plinth under the cabinets, it looks much more clean and neat this way.

Nice! Like that you closed the open section under the cabinets, much better looking this way!

    • While the kids and I have been enjoying some quality time with special friends and fam in South Africa, the orders and enquiries over at @fronteriors are coming in thick and fast. @liveloudgirl and I couldn't be more grateful for all the love, support and enthusiasm shown towards our new venture.
We are so excited to be sharing the next installments to our collection of doors, sides, tops and accessories for your much-loved IKEA frames. This cane cabinet (constructed with 2 x 128x60xm Besta cabinets and supported on our custom leg frame) is proving to be a firm favourite. Talk about 'furniture in disguise', eh!? image by @marli_smithphotography

    • Me just before I felt the wind temp and added another 3 layers of clothing ... 🙈❄
    • Brrr, game drives this past weekend have been sooo cold. I think all the animals are in hiding and frankly, I don't blame them. You know the game viewing is dismal when rangers are calling in giraffe sightings on the radio! But they're still one of my favourite animals to see so no complaints here 🦒💛❄🥶
    • It takes a special brand of crazy to enjoy sunset swims in rough water in the middle of winter. These kids have it in abundance. #holidays #kzn #saltrock #southafrica #travelwithkids #bestofhome #bestoftimes
    • Sorry about the radio silence around here but our first week in South Africa has been a very busy whirlwind. We settled into #hawkesholidayhome and then headed into the Midlands to drive my niece and nephew back to their boarding schools. While we were there, we made a mini vacay of it with a two night stay at beautiful Gowrie Farm. We visited loads of places, including the iconic sculpture of Madiba at the Nelson Mandela capture site. We're loving the weather and catch-ups with loads of friends and family, but really looking forward to getting into the bush at Zuka this weekend for some proper downtime with Ouma.
    • We've had such a wonderful 2 night stay at @housedatdru on Gowrie Farm. It's such a beautiful estate with so much to see and do in the area. Highly recommend
    • Crisp winter evenings in the KZN midlands are just magical. We are loving our stay at @housedatdru

    • It's so good to be back home in crisp, fresh air, lush greenery and small boutique stores everywhere!

    • The epic summer exit pack has begun and by this time tomorrow I'm going to be (hopefully) chilling right here in our living room at #hawkesholidayhome ... Actually, who am I kidding!? There will first have to be the epic unpack, and then I guess we'll need some grocery shopping done, and then the kids will be nagging me to go to the beach. But we'll be 'home' and it won't feel like someone left the oven door open. So that''s something to get excited about!
