La Cotte Farm, Franschhoek, SOUTH AFRICA

23/08/2019

One of the highlights of our summer break (which is indeed a winter break when you’re in South Africa) was a trip to the beautiful Cape region with friends who were visiting from London. I absolutely love everything about the Cape – from the picturesque landscapes to the beautiful wine farms and dramatic ocean views, it gives me all the holiday feels. And I don’t mind whether it’s summer or winter because it’s beautiful in all seasons. Since we were travelling as two families with five kids amongst us, we looked for a farm house to rent for our stay in the Franschhoek area. This way we could all be together in shared space, but with enough room for everyone to feel comfortable. Many hours of online research led us to La Cotte Farm – a place that has undoubtedly stolen our hearts.

We fell in love with everything about this beautiful home and property – breathtaking views, indigenous greenery and the traditional Cape Dutch architecture. Granted to it’s original owner in 1694, it remains one of the oldest estates in the area. The farm is conveniently situated on the outskirts of the village, at the foot of the mountain, and provided us with a great base to explore both Franschhoek and beyond. You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to accommodation at La Cotte with a number of different options to choose from, a guesthouse consisting of 12 rooms, a selection of cottages and the Main House. We decided on the latter and our expectations were well exceeded. The luxurious villa is full of character, dressed in traditional cottage décor with ample space and creature comforts – think underfloor heating, large open fireplace and a fully kitted basement area that serves as a private kids area complete with lounge, TV another own bathroom facilities.

While we were there there was an epic storm and the weather was pretty grey and miserable for our stay. Not that we minded some wind and rain in the slightest (13+ years in the desert teaches you a unique appreciation for that kind of weather), but I really struggled to get some good images for a blog post, so I requested some of the professional pictures from the property management for this post. You can see some of my pictures and more about the area on my social media. Look for story highlight reel named South Africa.

La Cotte farm is really ideal for a stay with kids, the property offers ample of space for exploring, with a duck pond and outside pool area that I imagine would be perfect for some blissful lounging about in summer. I’m plotting my return as I write this.

    • A little throwback to two sweet spaces we designed for shared sibling rooms - one for sisters and another for brothers. We love this @ikeauae Fjälkinge shelving unit (that I can almost pronounce correctly) for its clean lines and robust practicality. It brings an air of sophistication to any space, even kids rooms. So if you're in need of a good looking shelving unit, there's your Tuesday tip 😄
