Over the rainbow Nursery reveal

We met this lovely mama last year when she approached us to help with the design and installation of a shared boys and a shared girls room. Although she gravitated towards the colour palette we used for Mila’s nursery, her brief was really sweet in the sense that there wasn’t much of a brief, but rather an acknowledgement of the fact that she completely trusted us to run wild with our our creativity in the design – and so we did. In fact, we went all the way over the rainbow. It’s such a joy when clients put their trust in us and it tends to produce the best outcome. We wanted the space to be sweet, cozy and age-appropriate, but not entirely ‘baby-baby’ as the little occupant is already one year old.

To ensure a smooth transition from nursery to toddler room, we chose the Nobodinoz Pure Evolutive cot that converts easily to a junior bed. And we adore the fitted sheet we sourced from Lilu And Co Boutique, an Austrailia-based Etsy seller. On the walls we opted for a pale pink colour block (using Soft Skin and Skylight by Jotun) minty green, salmon pink and dusty rose tones were pulled from the large-scale rainbow artwork and brought into little touches throughout the room from textiles to toys.

As the room was short on storage space we installed PAX wardrobes from Ikea and changed the look with a few Zara Home knobs. Another storage solution was added in the form of a painted vintage inspired free-standing wardrobe – not only is it a great aesthetic element in the design but it offers so much additional storage for toys and blankets. We went custom with the chest of drawers, which allowed us to attain the perfect color and size. The affection we have for the brass mobile floating in the corner has no bounds, a beautiful piece handmade by the lovely Sacha from Juno + Ace.

Even though the room was carpeted, we still wanted to include a rug for colour and charm – and it works so well in there. The stunner of a daybed is from Tribe and also doubles as a reading nook with the help of some clear book ledges from Ikea.

Since installing the room, we’ve received news that the little NoFred bench under the window is a firm favorite of the wee inhabitant.

  • On a scale of wardrobe envy from 1 to 10, I'm clocking 25 as I witness the first installation of @fronteriors cane doors for PAX wardrobe frames at a client's home. I think we have reached #ikeahack level 100!

  • Happy National Day to the UAE!
This beautiful country has been our home and playground for 14 years. When we first arrived, we partied at Scarlet’s in Emirates Towers and spent weekends at the beach, often watching touch rugby on the open beach area (that is now the gardens of the Westin). I had the pleasure and privilege of working for the formable powerhouse that is @thenfd at The Grooming Company, during a time when she was pioneering the grooming industry in this region. Springs townhouses were just being handed over, there were only a handful of completed buildings in the Marina and JLT was an architectural plan. The Burj Khalifa was rising from foundation level, there was no Terminal 3, no Downtown Dubai, no Canal, no Business Bay crossing, no Salik tolls or any Metro lines to be seen. The old Garhoud bridge was a three lane affair that would bring traffic to it’s knees and closed to allow large vessels to pass. We feel really lucky to have seen this incredible city grow and develop to the iconic destination it is today.
We’ve had our ups & downs, but overall, this country has been amazingly good to us. Both our babies were born here and no matter where we might land one day, this will always be ‘home’ in their hearts.
PS: these pictures were taken by @nateleecocks sometime last year in the midst of a full-blown sandstorm. Nat, I’m still chuckling at the fact that we just carried on regardless!
After this bit of Dubai nostalgia, i forgot to mention something and now I’d really LOVE to hear from anyone who also remembers when @ikeauae was a small retail outlet in Deira City Centre mall!?? #UAEnationalday #spiritofthenation #mydubai #itsbeenawhile

  • It's such fun having our @fronteriors cabinets to play with in the new studio. We tried this new combination of beige slatted doors with black hardware and it's a beauty - particularly in front of the marmorino wall by @jotunpaintsarabia | Swipe through to get a closer look. This cabinet is built using 2 x BESTA 60x128 frames that are screwed together and supported on a custom leg frame. Add 2 x slatted doors, 2 x sides, 1 x top, 2 x handles and.... voila!

  • Throwback to sleepy mornings in South Africa this past summer, which of course was winter over there. And now its starting to feel much the same over here. Switching ACs off and opening the doors and windows feels like a re-awakening after Dubai's looooong summer! Anyone else loving this time of year?
