Piupiuchick at Martin & Ella

27/05/2019

Dubai’s ‘big summer break’ is hurtling towards us like a freight train with a mere five weeks left before school’s out and the mass exodus begins. It’s seems such a unique lifestyle quirk the way so many families collectively leave town over the same period to travel to their home countries or other exotic destinations during July and August, essentially to escape two of the warmest months of the year here in the UAE. I know that we are certainly looking forward to our imminent trip to South Africa, and for those of us who travel down to the Southern Hemisphere, our summer breaks are in fact winter escapes when we get there. It’s around this time of year, every year, that I’m on the lookout for some cute new gear for the kids. The Durban winter is by no means harsh, but we do find ourselves needing some warmer options, and of course with two kids growing like weeds, I need to buy new winter pieces every year.  This year I spotted a brand I was not familiar with at the newly launched online kids concept store, Martin & Ella. This hot new shop on the block stocks an impressive collection of furniture, accessories and clothing for children – all of which I was obviously thrilled about for our project and styling needs, but what the girls and I really fell in love with when we first trawled through their website was Piupiuchick kids wear.

Designed and produced near Porto, this Portuguese brand was started by two sisters and a friend in 2012. As with most newer brands, the company has a focus on organic and sustainable textiles, and whilst those ‘feel good, do good’ qualities have become an important part of my search criteria, there are two things that I particularly love about this brand – it caters not just to the tiny tots, but goes all the way up to 14, and many of the pieces are unisex. As my two are getting older, and as my work constantly exposes me to adorable brands and concepts for kids, I find that it can be a struggle to find ones that offer sizes beyond eight to ten. Piupiuchick is a breath of fresh air in this regard. And when I showed pictures to the kids, they were as enthusiastic as I was. Trust me, when Ethan shows an interest in anything that isn’t a matching khaki set designed for the bush, it’s worth a second look. And when he opts for a pink trackie top (sweater), and Kaitlyn picks a skirt, I’m sold!

Knowing that Martin and Ella caries sizes to cater to the entire House of Hawkes brood, aged 8 months to 10 years, we rounded up the smalls for a fun dress-up session and got clicking so we could share this beautiful brand with you.

You can shop all the kids’ looks online locally at Martin & Ella. I would hurry while their stocks last!

  • While the kids and I have been enjoying some quality time with special friends and fam in South Africa, the orders and enquiries over at @fronteriors are coming in thick and fast. @liveloudgirl and I couldn't be more grateful for all the love, support and enthusiasm shown towards our new venture.
We are so excited to be sharing the next installments to our collection of doors, sides, tops and accessories for your much-loved IKEA frames. This cane cabinet (constructed with 2 x 128x60xm Besta cabinets and supported on our custom leg frame) is proving to be a firm favourite. Talk about 'furniture in disguise', eh!? image by @marli_smithphotography

  • Me just before I felt the wind temp and added another 3 layers of clothing ... 🙈❄
  • Brrr, game drives this past weekend have been sooo cold. I think all the animals are in hiding and frankly, I don't blame them. You know the game viewing is dismal when rangers are calling in giraffe sightings on the radio! But they're still one of my favourite animals to see so no complaints here 🦒💛❄🥶
  • It takes a special brand of crazy to enjoy sunset swims in rough water in the middle of winter. These kids have it in abundance. #holidays #kzn #saltrock #southafrica #travelwithkids #bestofhome #bestoftimes
  • Sorry about the radio silence around here but our first week in South Africa has been a very busy whirlwind. We settled into #hawkesholidayhome and then headed into the Midlands to drive my niece and nephew back to their boarding schools. While we were there, we made a mini vacay of it with a two night stay at beautiful Gowrie Farm. We visited loads of places, including the iconic sculpture of Madiba at the Nelson Mandela capture site. We're loving the weather and catch-ups with loads of friends and family, but really looking forward to getting into the bush at Zuka this weekend for some proper downtime with Ouma.
  • We've had such a wonderful 2 night stay at @housedatdru on Gowrie Farm. It's such a beautiful estate with so much to see and do in the area. Highly recommend
  • Crisp winter evenings in the KZN midlands are just magical. We are loving our stay at @housedatdru

  • It's so good to be back home in crisp, fresh air, lush greenery and small boutique stores everywhere!

  • The epic summer exit pack has begun and by this time tomorrow I'm going to be (hopefully) chilling right here in our living room at #hawkesholidayhome ... Actually, who am I kidding!? There will first have to be the epic unpack, and then I guess we'll need some grocery shopping done, and then the kids will be nagging me to go to the beach. But we'll be 'home' and it won't feel like someone left the oven door open. So that''s something to get excited about!
