I’m relieved to be nearing the end of what has been a very busy week. Thursdays seem to come around so quickly, and this week I am most grateful for it.
My last few posts have been decor focused so I thought it was about time to throw a little design into the ring again. This was initiated by a dear friend of mine in South Africa, who recently asked me to make something for her new home. Actually, it’s not a new home as they built it a few years ago, but then lived further up the coast for a while and are now moving back in. There’s a lot of redecorating going on, which I am thrilled to be involved in with the exchange of various emails and snapshots via WhatsApp and Skype chats. How did we ever manage without smartphones. Seriously!?
So the piece she’s asked me to make for her is a little something I made after our daughter was born. I call it ‘the family numerology’…. sans any negative or mystical connotations, of course. She saw mine during a recent visit to Dubai and loved the idea. Come to think of it, there are very few people who don’t notice it in our home – some very quickly grasp the meaning or code behind what may initially appear as a random sequence of numbers – and others take a while longer to catch on. I guess its somewhat of a talking piece and I love watching people figure it out.
So if you haven’t already cracked the code, it’s simply our family’s significant dates in sequential order: our birthdays followed by our wedding date and the the arrival of our smalls. I have changed the typeface, colour scheme and frame a few times to best suit the various locations in which I have displayed it…. as I do, but this is a peek at the current look. I have something a little different in mind for my friend, a style and tone that’s more suited to her ‘vibe’, but I won’t spoil that surprise for her just yet.
It’s a super simple DIY for anyone who might want to snap up this idea, which makes a great gift, by the way. All you would need to do is to prepare artwork in PowerPoint or something similar (if you don’t have Illustrator), print on paper with a nice texture and pop into a ready-made frame. Done.

I am absolutely in LOVE! That is amazing!!!!! I love it. What a great idea. You have inspired me with framed words. I just love it. My one question is what type of frame would be suitable to frame words. My house if full of dark wood, so do I simply choose a dark wood frame and then print out the words I want, find a suitable spot in the house and Bob is your uncle? You make it all look so darn easy! When are you coming to my house to do it up?????????? 😉
Hi Monique, so glad you love the idea! Re the framing, anything that you think would suit your interior style would work, there’s really no specific formula. If your house is already predominantly dark wood, don’t feel that you need to stick to that – try mixing it up a bit. You could use gold or silver frames. You may be surprised with the results 😉 Kath
