Display your family history in numbers

I’m relieved to be nearing the end of what has been a very busy week. Thursdays seem to come around so quickly, and this week I am most grateful for it.

My last few posts have been decor focused so I thought it was about time to throw a little design into the ring again. This was initiated by a dear friend of mine in South Africa, who recently asked me to make something for her new home. Actually, it’s not a new home as they built it a few years ago, but then lived further up the coast for a while and are now moving back in. There’s a lot of redecorating going on, which I am thrilled to be involved in with the exchange of various emails and snapshots via WhatsApp and Skype chats. How did we ever manage without smartphones. Seriously!?

So the piece she’s asked me to make for her is a little something I made after our daughter was born. I call it ‘the family numerology’…. sans any negative or mystical connotations, of course. She saw mine during a recent visit to Dubai and loved the idea. Come to think of it, there are very few people who don’t notice it in our home – some very quickly grasp the meaning or code behind what may initially appear as a random sequence of numbers – and others take a while longer to catch on. I guess its somewhat of a talking piece and I love watching people figure it out.

So if you haven’t already cracked the code, it’s simply our family’s significant dates in sequential order: our birthdays followed by our wedding date and the the arrival of our smalls. I have changed the typeface, colour scheme and frame a few times to best suit the various locations in which I have displayed it…. as I do, but this is a peek at the current look. I have something a little different in mind for my friend, a style and tone that’s more suited to her ‘vibe’, but I won’t spoil that surprise for her just yet.

It’s a super simple DIY for anyone who might want to snap up this idea, which makes a great gift, by the way. All you would need to do is to prepare artwork in PowerPoint or something similar (if you don’t have Illustrator), print on paper with a nice texture and pop into a ready-made frame. Done.

See y’all next week, peeps. I hope you’re in for a fabulous weekend – ours looks to be a lot less dusty than last week.

    What a lovely idea!
(And so useful for husbands :-))

I am absolutely in LOVE! That is amazing!!!!! I love it. What a great idea. You have inspired me with framed words. I just love it. My one question is what type of frame would be suitable to frame words. My house if full of dark wood, so do I simply choose a dark wood frame and then print out the words I want, find a suitable spot in the house and Bob is your uncle? You make it all look so darn easy! When are you coming to my house to do it up?????????? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Hi Monique, so glad you love the idea! Re the framing, anything that you think would suit your interior style would work, there’s really no specific formula. If your house is already predominantly dark wood, don’t feel that you need to stick to that – try mixing it up a bit. You could use gold or silver frames. You may be surprised with the results ๐Ÿ˜‰ Kath

    • A mere 6 weeks remain before the summer break and I'm really looking forward to being back at @dunkirkestate for some down time. Forest walks and beach visits for the win!

    • Mariam from @interiorflavor reached out to me and asked if I'd like to participate in her #monthofinspiration campain and offer a tip to everyone. Mine is a really simple one that has to do with something I'm asked all the time... how do I have white furniture with kids and a pet? The answer is really simple - removable covers, peeps. My white sofa has them and they're washed every few months. It's the very reason why I partnered with @helmiibeds to design a bed frame that has removable, washable covers! No fuss, no stress. #toptip #removablebedcover #removablesofacovers #loosecovers
    • Progress report in Ethan's room... I wasn't feeling the one third ratio of the colour block against the bed, so raised the line to two thirds and I'm so glad I did. Try to ignore the pile of mess just visible on the bed and marvel at the wonder of that colour. It's called Northern Mystic but I'd totally have named it forest green. Either way, I'm loving it!

    • We've got a full house this weekend with my niece and nephew here and all 4 kids are coughing and congested ๐Ÿ˜” poor things. We've had to pass on our usual Saturday activities with in favour of a couch day. I caught little miss camera shy, aka Ava-licious, chilling hard with Peter Rabbit ๐Ÿฐ

    • I've put in an order for a new slip cover for my #helmiiXhouseofhawkes bed. It's for my guestroom makeover and I've opted for the off-white. I should have it by next week and I'll be sure to show you how quick and easy the change is! #bedslipcover guestroom #makeover #easypeasy
    • When @style____k (bless her for her patience) was trying to get a shot of us at the @fronteriors product shoot, but we were knee deep in hardware discussions. Again.
Also, could you die for the plywood fronts and top for BESTA? And the cane doors for BILLY!!?? ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜œ๐Ÿคญ

    • Today was a biggie for @liveloudgirl and I. That little idea about making custom fronts, tops and accessories for IKEA frames became a big reality as we embarked on our inaugural shoot for the @fronteriors website with the first few items fresh off the production line. The full collection isn't yet ready but we've decided that rather than waiting for everything to be finsihed before we go live, we're going to make items available to purchase as and when they are ready. A decision based largely on our excitement induced impatience, but also because of the 'are we there yet' questions we are fielding on a daily basis. And we get it. At this point, theres already a great selection of options coming online, including the hotly anticipated cane doors for the BILLY bookcase. We're so excited to bring this concept to the local market! Keep on eye out for the announcement of our website going live!
Big thanks to everyone who assisted us in pulling today together: @nordichomeworx for the dreamy flooring, @8thstreetstudios for the studio space, @style____k for getting me out of my ripped jeans, @marli_smithphotography for being behind the lens, @jleeksma for video magic, @jotunpaintsarabia for always having our back... and our walls! @thebowerycompany for accessories, for amazing organisation

    • Over at @fronteriors some of our first units are almost off the production line and we're prepping to shoot images for the website every soon. Epic excitement here as It's. All. Happening! Eeek. I'm so thrilled to be embarking on this big adventure with such a fabulous partner in design endeavours - @liveloudgirl ... afterall, someone's gotta look good around here! #funtimes #fronts #frontsquad #fronteriors #herewego
