South African Interior Scene : Victoria Verbaan

19/12/2018

I’m sure it comes as no surprise that I’m somewhat obsessed with the work of Durban-based artist and designer, Victoria Verbaan. Since I was introduced to her work by a fellow South African client earlier this year, I have incorporated it in many designs for clients as well as my own home.

I used some of my favourites in the master bedroom and bathroom at our new holiday home in South Africa and she’s released many more gorgeous pieces since then.

We recently connected with the incredibly talented creative to talk about her life, her inspiration and what’s in store.

– How did you discover your passion for art and what inspired you to become an artist?

I was very little. I drew very intricate and detailed hairstyles with a pencil. My teacher at the time called my Mum in to see them. I never stopped after that. I think it gave me the confidence to pursue what I love most, art. Painting and illustrating is my escape into a fantastical world. It allows me to challenge myself and explore life on a daily basis. It gives me the independence and individuality I need to be happy.

– If you could describe your work in a tweet, what would you say?

Hopeful, raw, sassy and playful at the same time.

– Who/what inspires your work?

Everything and anything! A face, a conversation, fashion, books, museums, galleries –  getting out of the studio and seeing what’s happening in the world.  Travel, colour in nature – there’s so much inspiration to be found.  I like to constantly challenge myself with new product ideas and collections which continuously pushes me to research and source.

– What is the best piece of advice that you’ve ever been given?

Focus on what you do best, never expect anything from anyone and never accept ‘it can’t be done’ for an answer.

– Something people don’t know about you?

I start to panic if I’m not in bed by 8:30pm.

– What’s on the horizon for Victoria Verbaan?

I’d like to work towards an exhibition and a possible collaboration which will hopefully have an interesting and unique outcome.

“to uplift and bring a smile is very important to me too, so if I can somehow do that with my work, that’s what I enjoy most!”

– Victoria

  • We started work on this shared sibling room just before the summer and after long delays with some of the items we ordered, we finally managed to apply the finishing touches last month. There's a full reveal on the blog. Link in profile.

  • @d3dubai is one of my favourite Dubai districts. I'll be back there this afternoon with @liveloudgirl to talk about building a business in the social media age and our @fronteriors journey thus far. We kick off at 6pm if you around and would like to join us. #downtowndesign #ddw2019
  • Yesterday was our first day in the new studio. Given the distinct lack of furniture, we unpacked all the crazy onto the one @andtradition sofa that we have. 😝 Thanks to @marli_smithphotography for capturing this hilarious moment, like the new age working mum that she is - with a baby on her hip. We were just missing our other brand new mummy. New chapter starts here. #studiofronteriors #girlgang

  • Aw, look at these little guys sky-rocketing the cuteness scale in yesterday's nursery installation. And as for that colour (Exhale) from @jotunpaintsarabia 2020 collection, I'm smitten!
  • @marli_smithphotography and I tried to shoot my kitchen makeover today but rain has ended play unexpectedly.... hey ho, you can't get me down though, I'm loving this new space too much!
  • A busy and exciting week lies ahead, peeps! Aside of an installation to complete for a lovely new client, I'm right on the cusp of a super exciting milestone. @liveloudgirl and I are moving into a shared studio space... because since the inception of @fronteriors we're basically married so getting a place together seems like the obvious next step 😂 But seriously though, we're becoming a blended tribe of sorts and we are really excited for this next chapter of creativity, with our respective teams working side by side while we steer the runaway train that is fronteriors.
The new studio is a dreamy blank canvas of endless artistic possibilities. We've already treated it to some @jotunpaintsarabia magic on the walls, but I suspect that that the evolution of this workspace will be constantly in motion. Stay tuned.

  • Forever discovering treasures in mom's office only to be told they're for someone else's room. She'll tell you that's the story of her life. Wonder where she gets that sense of drama? 🤔 🙎🏼‍♀️ 🐳 @bigstuffed

  • On the blog this morning is a better-late-than-never edition of our popular 'scene & heard' series. It's a look back at some of the team's summer highlights, including dreamy Netherlands coastal vibes and some Dubai gems discovered my Marli and Mila who spent a large chunk of the break locally.
