South African Retailers: Must Haves

SOUTH AFRICAN MUST HAVES

Being home for a holiday is always exciting and one of my favourite things to do. The allure of comfort food, good wine, friends and family is as good a reason as any to visit South Africa. This year, I have one more thing to be excited about. A few of my latest discoveries. A burst of new home decor shops that embrace minimalist design and Scandinavian influences, while mixing it with a good dash of South African style and earthiness.

I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite products from these newly discovered South African decor shops. Most of them sell products online, so be sure to check them out – if you’re shopping from abroad, exchange rates are in your favour. Featured retailers include Mia Melange, Mono, Esque, Zana Products, Little Love Kids and Simply Home.

Heading home for a holiday is always exciting. The promise of comfort food, good wine, friends and family is as good as reason as any to visit South Africa. This year, I have one more thing to be excited about. My latest discovery.. A burst of new home decor shops that embraces Scandinavian design and French influences, while mixing it with a good dash of South African spice. Stylish homeware is now available at a fraction of the price and I am ready to fill my holiday bags with beautiful pieces all the way from South Africa. I have put together a few of my favorite products from South African decor shops. Most of them sell products online, so be sure to check them out. Featured retailers include Mia Melange, Mono, Esque, Zana Products, Little Love Kids.

Mia Mélange (cover image) is a small home decor label founded by Mia Danieli in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Mia’s designs are inspired by her love for texture, nature, natural materials and ancient crafting techniques. She likes to combine all of these to create modern and functional design. I love the subtle colour palette.

Amongst many other things, Mono (1) has amazing prints available. From typography inspired designs to rich patterns of printed tapestries, Mono’s designs will create a focal point of any room. If monochromatic tones are on your radar, you’re sure to find something to your liking from this amazing online shop. Their products also include great lighting options like the mini copper Jack table lamp (9). This table lamp would be a great addition to any modern home office. Combine it with their Minimalist Calendar for the ultimate work station.

Esque sells stylish homeware online – great ceramics, desk lamps and wallpaper are readily available. A quick click on their latest products tab will give you a good idea what this shop is all about. The Hoi Ploy Metallic Pendant (2) features an elegant twisted fabric cable, and sturdy, hand turned fitting cups. These are designed as permanent fixtures for those who admire a blend of traditional and contemporary style. Im also a big fan of the Geo Table (7).

Like Esque, Zana isn’t really a new discovery but I love their range and thought it worth another mention on here. Their Yay Flag Banner (3) is made from 100% cotton fabric and the Lines Continental cushion (4) is screen printed by hand – both items great for a graphic element in any room.

Little Love Kids is the ideal shop if you are planning your next nursery or upgrading your little one’s room. They stock a range of on-trend bedding, blankets, furniture and apparel. My favourite pick has to be the Crochet Carpets, leather strap shelves and square knobs (6). Use these colourful knobs to hang jackets, scarfs or even pot plants from.

Simply Home is all about bespoke products, ethically sourced and developed on South African soil.  With clean lines, neutral colours and the use of local raw materials, the Simply Home brand is where simplicity and sophistication meet. I have my eye firmly fixed on the adorable painted bunny in water colours (5). Another brilliantly versatile item is the white-dipped Belly Basket (8) – it has the ability to be a subtle focal piece, an indoor plant pot or a storage solution. My daughter manages to stuff hers with a whole village of Barbies.

Happy shopping, folks.

    • Mariam from @interiorflavor reached out to me and asked if I'd like to participate in her #monthofinspiration campain and offer a tip to everyone. Mine is a really simple one that has to do with something I'm asked all the time... how do I have white furniture with kids and a pet? The answer is really simple - removable covers, peeps. My white sofa has them and they're washed every few months. It's the very reason why I partnered with @helmiibeds to design a bed frame that has removable, washable covers! No fuss, no stress. #toptip #removablebedcover #removablesofacovers #loosecovers
    • Progress report in Ethan's room... I wasn't feeling the one third ratio of the colour block against the bed, so raised the line to two thirds and I'm so glad I did. Try to ignore the pile of mess just visible on the bed and marvel at the wonder of that colour. It's called Northern Mystic but I'd totally have named it forest green. Either way, I'm loving it!

    • We've got a full house this weekend with my niece and nephew here and all 4 kids are coughing and congested 😔 poor things. We've had to pass on our usual Saturday activities with @pirates.surf in favour of a couch day. I caught little miss camera shy, aka Ava-licious, chilling hard with Peter Rabbit 🐰

    • I've put in an order for a new slip cover for my #helmiiXhouseofhawkes bed. It's for my guestroom makeover and I've opted for the off-white. I should have it by next week and I'll be sure to show you how quick and easy the change is! #bedslipcover guestroom #makeover #easypeasy
    • When @style____k (bless her for her patience) was trying to get a shot of us at the @fronteriors product shoot, but we were knee deep in hardware discussions. Again.
Also, could you die for the plywood fronts and top for BESTA? And the cane doors for BILLY!!?? 😁😜🤭

    • Today was a biggie for @liveloudgirl and I. That little idea about making custom fronts, tops and accessories for IKEA frames became a big reality as we embarked on our inaugural shoot for the @fronteriors website with the first few items fresh off the production line. The full collection isn't yet ready but we've decided that rather than waiting for everything to be finsihed before we go live, we're going to make items available to purchase as and when they are ready. A decision based largely on our excitement induced impatience, but also because of the 'are we there yet' questions we are fielding on a daily basis. And we get it. At this point, theres already a great selection of options coming online, including the hotly anticipated cane doors for the BILLY bookcase. We're so excited to bring this concept to the local market! Keep on eye out for the announcement of our website going live!
Big thanks to everyone who assisted us in pulling today together: @nordichomeworx for the dreamy flooring, @8thstreetstudios for the studio space, @style____k for getting me out of my ripped jeans, @marli_smithphotography for being behind the lens, @jleeksma for video magic, @jotunpaintsarabia for always having our back... and our walls! @thebowerycompany for accessories, @valentina.p.design for amazing organisation

    • Over at @fronteriors some of our first units are almost off the production line and we're prepping to shoot images for the website every soon. Epic excitement here as It's. All. Happening! Eeek. I'm so thrilled to be embarking on this big adventure with such a fabulous partner in design endeavours - @liveloudgirl ... afterall, someone's gotta look good around here! #funtimes #fronts #frontsquad #fronteriors #herewego
