We bought a coastal holiday home in South Africa

14/04/2018

If you’ve seen my latest Instagram post, you may already have seen the news that we bought a holiday home in South Africa! And whilst that makes for a great headline, it’s really a holiday flat/apartment that’s a few kilometers from the beach. But close enough to leverage coastal vibes. To be more precise, it’s located in a beautiful and secure coastal forest estate in Salt Rock, on the north coat of KZN – the area that I grew up around, and where I spent many childhood holidays.

After 12 years of living as expats, we are so excited to have our own place to settle in to when we visit South Africa. We will also consider renting it on Airbnb when we are not using it. Needless to say, I have a big project on my hands as we are planning to do some light renovation work to the master bathroom, kitchen and enclosed patio area before we tackle furnishing the place from scratch. Gulp.

As luck would have it, I have been invited to attend a press trip to Europe with AXOR to visit their Hansgrohe Group headquarters in Germany and see the roots of the brand, including a full tour of their factory and museum. We will then travel to Milan to attend then Salone de Mobile design fair and be among the first to see their latest product launch, AXOR ME. Excited much??!!

After a few weeks of deliberating over bathroom fittings, I think I can safely say I should be well informed and know exactly what I want/need for our bathroom renovation after this trip.

(see details of a similar trip I attended with IKEA to visit their headquarters in Sweden)

In the coming months, I will be sharing our first personal renovation project and subsequent decorating mission in great detail as a series on the blog – so stay tuned for lots of inspiration, requests for advice from those of you who’ve done this before, ideas and no doubt a few tears along the way!

In the meantime, I’ve started to throw some very basic mood board concepts together for the open plan living area and am working on the design concept for the master bathroom makeover. I’m really excited to start sourcing from local suppliers in the Ballito/Salt Rock area and have a eye on a few pieces from some of my favourite home stores already.

Watch this space.

    • It started with a conversation over lunch that went something like this: 'so these custom doors and tops that we're forever making for clients, we should probably just make more and sell them because everyone always asks where we got them'... hmm, 'seems like a perfectly reasonable plan for two people already overwhelmed by their workload. Yalla, let's do it!' And then there was the #billyhack that accelerated our @fronteriors launch plans. Read all about my exciting new business venture with @liveloudgirl on the blog. Link in profile.

    • Bed. That's where the party's at for me tonight. I can feel a cold coming at me like a freight train so I'm dosing myself and catching some early zzz's. This room though, and that afternoon light, from our styling sesh at casa @whitemossdecor is giving me good vibes. Night night insta family.
