Helmii X House of Hawkes collaboration

30/03/2019

When I started my blog and subsequent interior design career path almost six years ago, never could I have imagined some of the personal milestones it would lead to. If you’d told me that I would been asked by a bed retailer to design a bed for them, I’d no doubt have laughed at the suggestion, but fast forward to 2019 and it is with great excitement that I announce another design collaboration – this time with Helmii, a Dubai-based bed store, specialising in affordable, customised beds. (If you missed the first big collab announcement, see that here)

Fairly new to the market, Helmii (which, by the way, means dreams in Arabic), currently offers a selection of ready-made beds as well as a range of bed frames that can be customised to your liking – i.e.: you pick the style you like and customise it with your choice of fabric type and colour. For our collaboration, I decided to take things a step further by steering away from the traditional upholstered headboard in favour of a something more versatile – a removable cover for the entire bed frame – much like a slip cover that you would usually associate with a sofa.

The look and feel that I had in mind from the outset was a relaxed linen bed. Something that was cosy and inviting but would carry my signature simple and uncomplicated aesthetic. To begin with, I had pure linen in mind for it’s rich texture. Finding the right fabric was a crucial part of the design process, and after much trial and error, we settled on a pre-shrunk cotton and linen blend for it’s affordability and washability, but the ultimate intention was to create a cover that looks good, fits well and could be easily removed. I am thrilled to say that, in partnership with Helmii’s factory, we have achieved just that. House of Hawkes’ first foray into the world of product design is a stylish removable cover that can be switched out within minutes for a complete change of scenery in the bedroom. You could literally change your bed with the seasons, or in between visitors, in the case of a guest room.

To get a feel for how the House of Hawkes bed will look in a home, we styled it in a quite few different ways using two of the colours – Beige and Dark Grey. Changing up the look so quickly and easily is what I love most about this bed. With a new cover and a few different accessories, you can transform a room in a day. And the cover really is super easy to remove. It’s also washable, making it a really practical choice for all rooms.

This launch collection is a ‘limited edition’ range of colours in a beautifully textured linen and cotton blend fabric. Helmii will also make the covers available in their standard range of fabrics, however, these are dry-cleanable only and the website will differentiate between the two categories of fabrics.

I am so grateful to Simon Moore at Helmii for affording me the opportunity to dip my toe into the world of product design. I have loved every moment of the process and look forward to long working relationship with this homegrown company.

We are already planning the next collection of slip covers for this versatile bed that will offer a completely different look and feel. And in the meantime, I’ve nabbed one for myself and am planning a makeover in my guest room with this new bed! Stay tuned for that.

Yalla, let's do it!' And then there was the #billyhack that accelerated our @fronteriors launch plans. Read all about my exciting new business venture with @liveloudgirl on the blog. Link in profile.
