Our Holiday Home Reveal Part 3 : Master bedroom and bathrooms

29/09/2018

Work has been so ridiculously busy the past two weeks that I haven’t been on the blog much. We are working on some great new projects which I look forward to sharing on here in the coming weeks but for now, I’m conscious that I still owe you guys more room reveals from our new holiday home. So whilst the family are chilling in the pool this weekend morning, I’ve started to type this post on my iPad whilst nursing a virgin mojito. Multitasking at its best.

I’m going to show you what we did with the master bedroom and it’s en-suite bathroom – and since the guest bathroom has been done in the same style, I’ll add that in here too.

THE MASTER BEDROOM

That big old four poster bed from Weylandts was not an easy decision for the master bedroom but we are really happy with it in this space. I had seen this bed used in other spaces by my sister-in-law who’s a decorator so I was familiar with it and loved its simple style. I was worried though that it might clutter the room and spoil the airy atmosphere, but we decided to go with it in the end and it’s such a good fit. I found the concrete side tables at Coricraft and love how they look next to the raw wood bed frame and those brass wall lamps that I carried in my luggage from Dubai-based online store, The Bowery Company.

The dresser was sourced from @home and is such a good match. My long search for a large mirror with a super slim frame paid off when I found Durban-based Arkivio and their range of custom products. I can’t compliment the quality of this workmanship enough.  Smaller accessories included that gloriously soft Hertex throw on the bed and scatter cushions from another one of my new favorites, Novella Design. The hide on the floor is from Leisure Lounge and they have a great selection – as does Hides of Africa.

THE MASTER BATHROOM

Both bathrooms in the apartment were a complete gut job – we changed everything from flooring and wall tiles to baths, showers, vanities and taps! I shared my plans for the bathroom here when we first started planning the renovation and I find it’s always so interesting to look back at the ideas you had for something after it’s all done. I think we really stuck to the plans on this one and I can honestly say that the bathrooms are just what I wanted them to be.

Getting to the end goal isn’t always smooth sailing – we had a few challenges in master bathroom (I won’t bore you with the details but they involved floor levels and concealing plumbing that was previously above floor level). It meant that we needed a step up into the bathroom from the wardrobe area which I wasn’t thrilled about initially – but now that it’s all done, I barely even notice it.  Heaven help anyone who tried to convince my mid-renovation self that it was going to be no big deal in the end ; )

The herringbone subway tile on the walls presented it’s own set of complications but we stuck with it, despite some areas having to be redone more than once. We chose a matte version with no bevel on the edge and white grouting. We also opted to tile only the areas that were absolutely necessary and left all other walls as just painted. For the flooring, we chose a beautiful light grey terrazzo look tile. All the brassware is from the Hansgrohe range and we are thrilled with the quality of the fittings. That Rain shower is everything!

The freestanding bath tub is from Victoria + Albert Baths. We needed to find a small tub that was 1500 mm or less and the Vetralla fit the specifications perfectly. I love this bath so much. I am also really happy that we included the alcove above the bath mixer, not only because it looks great but it’s so functional. And don’t even get my started on how obsessed I am with the Victoria Verbaan print leaning on the ledge.

There was much back and forth on whether we should build a custom cabinets with on-counter basins for the vanity areas vs installing something ready-made. The ready-made vanities won in the end because it worked out to be more economical and I love the space that the deep drawers offer. We picked the Milan vanity from the Clear Cube range for the master bathroom and something a little smaller for the guest / kids bathroom.

GUEST BATHROOM

The last two visuals below are of the second bathroom which sits in the passage between the guest room and the kids room. It has a built in bath and a smaller shower and basin area but all the finishes are the same.

Next reveal will be the guest bedroom and the kids room.

    Hi there,

I absolutely love your bathrooms. Would you mind sharing your floor tile supplier – I’m searching for something similar for our house.

hello Chivonne, thanks so much. we got our floor tiles from Malls Tiles in Durban. Ask for Ncumisa – she is super helpful ; )

Love it! So simple and elegant!

What color paint did you use in the main bedroom?

It is all simply stunning. Well done.

    • Who even knew a plywood cabinet could look so beautiful!? Or that there 2 IKEA besta frames hidden below those fronts, sides and top?? Its a @fronteriors magic trick! 🧙‍♂️🤭
    • Our second @fronteriors product shoot is happening in two parts this week and we’re beyond excited to share this new batch of fronteriors products with you! You’ve all seen and loved the BILLY cabinet with cane doors, but now you get to meet his big brother – a wider, deeper and all round sexier cane cabinet made up of two BESTA frames supported on our custom metal leg frame. Two cane doors, two sides and one top complete the look of what is probably one of our personal favourite combinations. Stay tuned for more sneak peeks later on this this week.

    • Lazy Saturdays.... for some.
    • We've got double doggie trouble around here for a few days as Pep's sister, Jessie, is stay with us while her humans (also our humans) are in South Africa.
    • Waking up to music is a good way to start the day. Although Pepper's not still not sure what's happening in here when the beat drops... 😂 there's always a frantic little bark like someone's coming for her. Cray cray pup!

    • Around this time last year I was working on a secret makeover project for Kaitlyn's bedroom. She went to school with much resistance on the morning of her birthday and came home to a different room. The reaction was priceless! But seriously, where has a whole year gone? #timeflies #kidspo
    • Loved seeing this room we designed last year featured over at @mintymagazine today. Despite it being a little over a year ago, it seems like a lifetime ago. Makes.you realise how much happens in a year and how quickly it goes.
    • That time we kitted all the @houseofhawkes smalls out in the cool new @piupiuchick collection from @martin_and_ella - I think it was one of the last mornings that you could be outdoors without actually melting, so I guess it was well timed. ☀️🔥🕶🤩

    • Say hello to my new toy, the B&O M5 wireless speaker.  She’s busting out the tunes whilst ticking all the aesthetic and audio quality boxes, looking ever so pretty amidst this re-styled corner of my bedroom. She’s destined for our holiday home in South Africa this summer (we’ve been on the hunt for a good wireless speaker for some time), but in the meantime I’m really enjoying having music in our bedroom again. I think my last source of audio in the bedroom was a clock radio!! Er, who remembers those?

In other news, the hubster is at an event this evening and I’m about to pop my podcast cherry (true story!) and I’m looking for recommendations, please. I’m yet to download a single episode, if that’s even what we call them, but I’ve got the audio situation on fleek. Kids and neighbours may be listening in too! I’m a strong case for the term ‘all the gear and no idea’, so please indulge me with your suggestions with what’s good in the podcast arena. I want to get tonight’s party started.
