A touch of teal: Dulux color of the year 2014

22/02/2014

Dulux predicted teal as the color of choice for 2014. A stark contrast to Pantone’s Colour of the Year, Radiant Orchid. I have to admit that I find myself firmly rooted in the Dulux camp on this one. Teal is by far a more refreshing color. According to Dulux, it “combines the natural harmony of green with the tranquility of blue to symbolize balance”, and I concur. Teal, or ‘Sea Urchin 1’, the precise shade specified by Dulux, combines beautifully with shades of blue and green, placing it comfortably within the palette of my current color crush, duck egg blue. Yay! This…

Style file: Antlers

19/02/2014

Considering my dislike of traditional taxidermy, I have a rather contradictory crush on antlers. The use of antlers (real and faux) as decor accessories is nothing new, they have been increasing in popularity for some time now, moving beyond the stereotype hunting lodges and into stylish homes of all genres. Admittedly, it took some for me to fully embrace the trend, but now that I am on board, I can’t help but love the versatile use of antlers in an array of decorative applications, from  conventional wall mounts and well-placed decorative accents to more functional and practical uses as candlesticks,…

Afro-chic outdoor area

14/02/2014

I thought I would share with you some images of my brother and his wife’s charming and rustic pool/entertainment area where I recently spent some time. I call it rustic, because it really is, in every sense of the word – they live in the middle of the bush on a private game reserve. I absolutely love this space with its practical design and exquisite view of the open plains. And the odd wild animal dotted around the garden certainly adds to the relaxed bush vibe. Anton and Paula added this pool and adjacent entertainment area to their front garden…

Off the radar

14/02/2014

It’s been a while since I posted something here so apologies for my absence. In the early hours of 25 January I received the devastating news that my father had passed away. We left immediately for South Africa and the almost three weeks that followed have been somewhat of a blur. It’s the news you dread your whole life and all of a sudden it became my reality. The trip home was deeply emotional and mentally exhausting, but it was also a great comfort to be around family in the place that my Dad so dearly loved – the African bush….

DIY Printable stickers for baby’s monthly photos

19/01/2014

There are few things in this world that will have me sitting at my screen saying ‘aaaaah’ out loud, but images of babies, particularly newborns, will do it every time. I can stare at them for hours on end. I mean, what’s not to love about those pint-sized little beings? I have a serious appreciation for those precious moments being beautifully captured because, as a mom-of-two, I know that they pass all too quickly and before you know it, your tiny little newborn is sitting up all on his own and wolfing down solid foods. Now I would be lying…

DIY this Valentine’s Day

14/01/2014

I can’t believe that Valentine’s Day is only a month away. We only just got through Christmas and New Year and it’s already time to start thinking about the next holiday. In our household, Valentine’s Day was forever postponed by a week when we welcomed our baby boy into the world on 14 February 2009. In an attempt to keep his special day ‘all about him’, my hubby and I agreed that from then onwards, we would keep any possible exchange of Valentine’s gifts and/or celebrations (rare as they may be) for another day, and we settled for a week…

Style file: The paint-dipped effect

06/01/2014

As far as trends go, I am well aware that this one may not be cutting-edge, in fact, it may even be bordering on ‘last season’, but nonetheless, some things are always in style and I for one, am still a big fan of anything with a paint dipped aesthetic. Safe to say that what was once a ‘yeah, I kind of like that’ opinion has now developed into a full-blown crush. Source A | B | C I suspect the sudden renewed interest in this trend has to do with the application of colours. When I first noticed the…

Announcing Chase | Baby boy stationery & wall art

05/01/2014

As if Christmas week wasn’t exciting enough, our extended family was recently blessed with an adorable new arrival. My cousin, Ryan, and his beautiful wife, Stacey, welcomed their firstborn – a bouncing baby boy – into the world just a few days before Christmas. They named him Chase Clarke Patterson. Love it! Welcome to the world, little guy. Could you be any cuter? Ryan and Stacey visited Dubai a few months ago and I got to spend some time with Stacey discussing ideas for her nursery. I got a good feel for the ‘vision’ she has for all her baby…

  • Spends the holiday thinking, I really need a nice big fiddle leaf for that corner. Buys one two days before leaving.
Crazy much?
Thank goodness we have a cleaner who comes in periodically - am passing the baton to her as she'll now have the responsibility of keeping it alive. All the best with that, darlin'. .

  • So enjoying early walks and slow mornings with the kids - and ever conscious that there are so few mornings like this left before its back to school and work and busy routines. Savouring it all. We decided to go Dutch for brekkie this morning with some pancakes made from @woolworths_sa gluten free ready mix. They were delish!! Do yourself a favour and get some. Also, while you're spoiling yourself, find someone who looks at you like my kids look at pancakes.
  • So glad I went with dark lower cabinets in this kitchen. I realised this morning, as we were packing for a quick trip to Zuka, that I've posted barely any pics of #hawkesholidayhome since I've been here. Such a weirdo. Happy Saturday y'all! .

  • I arrived in South Africa with a laundry list of things I wanted to do / get done while I was here. Anyone want to attempt a guess on how many of those things I've actually accomplished? ... anyone?

  • So many beautiful and inspiring homes to see on my morning walk. I just love the pretty creeper on this wall. And I hope the owner doesn't find me super creepy for admiring it 🙈🤔😊
  • Quite possibly my favourite corner of #hawkesholidayhome
