Style file: Exposed light bulbs

27/02/2014

Exposed light bulbs. Who knew I could have such a thing for these babies? They definitely don’t sit within my usual sense of order… anyone who knows me would agree that I should be inclined to put a shade on it, but strange as it is, I am seeing them all over and I am loving them. Like, really loving them. A lot. It all started a few weeks ago whilst researching another post, I stumbled quite coincidentally, as you do, across Dutch designer, Alex DeWitte’s aptly named, The Big Bubble light. I think I might actually have gasped out…

DIY: Painted African baskets

24/02/2014

Since living away from home, I seem to have some sort of subliminal urge to incorporate bits of Africa into my decor. I guess its partly a comfort thing but it also has a lot to do with my love of textures and an appreciation for the unique and irregular nature of handmade items. Woven baskets are an absolute favorite of mine, not only for practical storage purposes but also as wall art. When displayed as ‘art’, these baskets offer a stunning three dimensional focal point. I have had my little collection of flat woven baskets for years – they…

A touch of teal: Dulux color of the year 2014

22/02/2014

Dulux predicted teal as the color of choice for 2014. A stark contrast to Pantone’s Colour of the Year, Radiant Orchid. I have to admit that I find myself firmly rooted in the Dulux camp on this one. Teal is by far a more refreshing color. According to Dulux, it “combines the natural harmony of green with the tranquility of blue to symbolize balance”, and I concur. Teal, or ‘Sea Urchin 1’, the precise shade specified by Dulux, combines beautifully with shades of blue and green, placing it comfortably within the palette of my current color crush, duck egg blue. Yay! This…

Style file: Antlers

19/02/2014

Considering my dislike of traditional taxidermy, I have a rather contradictory crush on antlers. The use of antlers (real and faux) as decor accessories is nothing new, they have been increasing in popularity for some time now, moving beyond the stereotype hunting lodges and into stylish homes of all genres. Admittedly, it took some for me to fully embrace the trend, but now that I am on board, I can’t help but love the versatile use of antlers in an array of decorative applications, from  conventional wall mounts and well-placed decorative accents to more functional and practical uses as candlesticks,…

Afro-chic outdoor area

14/02/2014

I thought I would share with you some images of my brother and his wife’s charming and rustic pool/entertainment area where I recently spent some time. I call it rustic, because it really is, in every sense of the word – they live in the middle of the bush on a private game reserve. I absolutely love this space with its practical design and exquisite view of the open plains. And the odd wild animal dotted around the garden certainly adds to the relaxed bush vibe. Anton and Paula added this pool and adjacent entertainment area to their front garden…

Off the radar

14/02/2014

It’s been a while since I posted something here so apologies for my absence. In the early hours of 25 January I received the devastating news that my father had passed away. We left immediately for South Africa and the almost three weeks that followed have been somewhat of a blur. It’s the news you dread your whole life and all of a sudden it became my reality. The trip home was deeply emotional and mentally exhausting, but it was also a great comfort to be around family in the place that my Dad so dearly loved – the African bush….

DIY Printable stickers for baby’s monthly photos

19/01/2014

There are few things in this world that will have me sitting at my screen saying ‘aaaaah’ out loud, but images of babies, particularly newborns, will do it every time. I can stare at them for hours on end. I mean, what’s not to love about those pint-sized little beings? I have a serious appreciation for those precious moments being beautifully captured because, as a mom-of-two, I know that they pass all too quickly and before you know it, your tiny little newborn is sitting up all on his own and wolfing down solid foods. Now I would be lying…

DIY this Valentine’s Day

14/01/2014

I can’t believe that Valentine’s Day is only a month away. We only just got through Christmas and New Year and it’s already time to start thinking about the next holiday. In our household, Valentine’s Day was forever postponed by a week when we welcomed our baby boy into the world on 14 February 2009. In an attempt to keep his special day ‘all about him’, my hubby and I agreed that from then onwards, we would keep any possible exchange of Valentine’s gifts and/or celebrations (rare as they may be) for another day, and we settled for a week…

  • We started work on this shared sibling room just before the summer and after long delays with some of the items we ordered, we finally managed to apply the finishing touches last month. There's a full reveal on the blog. Link in profile.

  • @d3dubai is one of my favourite Dubai districts. I'll be back there this afternoon with @liveloudgirl to talk about building a business in the social media age and our @fronteriors journey thus far. We kick off at 6pm if you around and would like to join us. #downtowndesign #ddw2019
  • Yesterday was our first day in the new studio. Given the distinct lack of furniture, we unpacked all the crazy onto the one @andtradition sofa that we have. 😝 Thanks to @marli_smithphotography for capturing this hilarious moment, like the new age working mum that she is - with a baby on her hip. We were just missing our other brand new mummy. New chapter starts here. #studiofronteriors #girlgang

  • Aw, look at these little guys sky-rocketing the cuteness scale in yesterday's nursery installation. And as for that colour (Exhale) from @jotunpaintsarabia 2020 collection, I'm smitten!
  • @marli_smithphotography and I tried to shoot my kitchen makeover today but rain has ended play unexpectedly.... hey ho, you can't get me down though, I'm loving this new space too much!
  • A busy and exciting week lies ahead, peeps! Aside of an installation to complete for a lovely new client, I'm right on the cusp of a super exciting milestone. @liveloudgirl and I are moving into a shared studio space... because since the inception of @fronteriors we're basically married so getting a place together seems like the obvious next step πŸ˜‚ But seriously though, we're becoming a blended tribe of sorts and we are really excited for this next chapter of creativity, with our respective teams working side by side while we steer the runaway train that is fronteriors.
The new studio is a dreamy blank canvas of endless artistic possibilities. We've already treated it to some @jotunpaintsarabia magic on the walls, but I suspect that that the evolution of this workspace will be constantly in motion. Stay tuned.

  • Forever discovering treasures in mom's office only to be told they're for someone else's room. She'll tell you that's the story of her life. Wonder where she gets that sense of drama? πŸ€” πŸ™ŽπŸΌβ€β™€οΈ 🐳 @bigstuffed

  • On the blog this morning is a better-late-than-never edition of our popular 'scene & heard' series. It's a look back at some of the team's summer highlights, including dreamy Netherlands coastal vibes and some Dubai gems discovered my Marli and Mila who spent a large chunk of the break locally.
