Style file: Duck egg blue

19/12/2013

I am terribly bored of our dining room. It is in desperate need of some attention and sprucing up – has been for some time now. Everything in there is simply functional and not particularly pretty or inspiring. I think it may even be bordering on drab. I think what’s really bothering me is that it is all dark wood in there while the rest of the house has been lightened and brightened bit by bit over the past year. Safe to say it is just one of those rooms that I haven’t gotten around to fiddling with, but I’ve decided…

New sofa covers

18/12/2013

I’ve been a very bad blogger. It’s been almost three weeks since my last post. Eeeek! What is it about this time of year that leaves you with no time at all? I’m armed with a bunch of excuses from which I’ll spare you on this occasion. So without further ado, herewith the second part of my preparations for Christmas guests: arranging new covers for my sofas. You may recall the rush to get my outside cushions recovered in the post about my outdoor furniture makeover, well, I decided it would be practical to have the upholsterer (Sense Furnishings) collect…

DIY Outdoor furniture makeover

22/11/2013

OMG, the parentals are coming! My mom and dad are arriving imminently for their annual visit and there’s been a sudden rush to get a bunch of things done around the house so that there appears to be some sense of progress and order since their last visit. Their last visit was somewhat shambolic as we moved house during their stay. It was far from relaxing for them or anyone else. I was so grateful to have them around though because, as any parent of two smalls would know, it was invaluable to have the kids distracted and entertained while…

A little lady is turning seven

20/11/2013

I have only just started out on this blogging adventure and already it’s been almost a month since my last post. I am sure I should be getting to this more frequently. Oh dear. Safe to say I’ve been a busy little bee since Halloween and I’ll tell you why in a few separate posts to follow (shortly, I promise), but for now, I wanted to share something pretty. The daughter of a dear friend of mine is going to be celebrating her birthday this week. I have known this sweet little girl since she was born and I can…

Halloween printables to DIY for

29/10/2013

I can hardly believe its that time of year again. Our neighbourhood is abuzz with Halloween excitement and spooky decor – its such a fun time for the kids…… and ahem, some adults too. That said, we live in a community that is really culturally diverse and alas, Halloween and all it’s tricks is not for everyone. I’ve always thought that a little note or sign at the door is really helpful for parents and kids to know, without hazarding a potentially awkward guess, whether trick or treaters are welcome. We’re a household who are happy to indulge these little…

Printable Christmas gift tags

06/10/2013

I’ve been working on some goodies for Christmas and thought that I would share these printable Christmas gift tags with you all. I hope you like them. You will need: Cardstock of at least 180 gsm Single hole punch Ribbon, cord or embroidery cotton I tried both cotton and cord for my examples above, and whilst I think the cord has a nicer feel (less floppy), I love how the red cotton picks up the touches of red in the tags. First prize would be red cord but I was unsuccessful in finding that. You could also try printing the…

DIY Office desk

01/10/2013

I’ve been using this ‘solution’ for my home office for years now. It’s always worked really well for me as it offers loads of storage space. Folks are surprised when I tell them that my desk is actually just a few components of an Ikea kitchen. My desk is made up of 1x FAKTUM cabinet with shelves, 1 x FAKTUM cabinet with drawers, and a LAGAN solid wood (beech) worktop. However, Ikea have recently revised their entire kitchen range and as a result, the names and sizes of these components have changed. See notes below for more details. I subsequently replaced the LAGAN worktop with a deeper/larger piece…

Announcing Ava

27/09/2013

Living away from your home country and family can be really difficult at times. It didn’t seem that bad when we first arrived here possibly because (A) living in a new and exciting city was still somewhat of a novelty, and (B), I hadn’t yet had kids. So it’s not at all surprising that I’ve found it increasingly challenging since the arrival of my children, who sadly, don’t get to spend much time with their extended family, especially grandparents. With this in mind, I consider myself very lucky to have my dear cousin (and closest friend since birth) living right…

  • While the kids and I have been enjoying some quality time with special friends and fam in South Africa, the orders and enquiries over at @fronteriors are coming in thick and fast. @liveloudgirl and I couldn't be more grateful for all the love, support and enthusiasm shown towards our new venture.
We are so excited to be sharing the next installments to our collection of doors, sides, tops and accessories for your much-loved IKEA frames. This cane cabinet (constructed with 2 x 128x60xm Besta cabinets and supported on our custom leg frame) is proving to be a firm favourite. Talk about 'furniture in disguise', eh!? image by @marli_smithphotography

  • Me just before I felt the wind temp and added another 3 layers of clothing ... ๐Ÿ™ˆโ„
  • Brrr, game drives this past weekend have been sooo cold. I think all the animals are in hiding and frankly, I don't blame them. You know the game viewing is dismal when rangers are calling in giraffe sightings on the radio! But they're still one of my favourite animals to see so no complaints here ๐Ÿฆ’๐Ÿ’›โ„๐Ÿฅถ
  • It takes a special brand of crazy to enjoy sunset swims in rough water in the middle of winter. These kids have it in abundance. #holidays #kzn #saltrock #southafrica #travelwithkids #bestofhome #bestoftimes
  • Sorry about the radio silence around here but our first week in South Africa has been a very busy whirlwind. We settled into #hawkesholidayhome and then headed into the Midlands to drive my niece and nephew back to their boarding schools. While we were there, we made a mini vacay of it with a two night stay at beautiful Gowrie Farm. We visited loads of places, including the iconic sculpture of Madiba at the Nelson Mandela capture site. We're loving the weather and catch-ups with loads of friends and family, but really looking forward to getting into the bush at Zuka this weekend for some proper downtime with Ouma.
  • We've had such a wonderful 2 night stay at @housedatdru on Gowrie Farm. It's such a beautiful estate with so much to see and do in the area. Highly recommend
  • Crisp winter evenings in the KZN midlands are just magical. We are loving our stay at @housedatdru

  • It's so good to be back home in crisp, fresh air, lush greenery and small boutique stores everywhere!

  • The epic summer exit pack has begun and by this time tomorrow I'm going to be (hopefully) chilling right here in our living room at #hawkesholidayhome ... Actually, who am I kidding!? There will first have to be the epic unpack, and then I guess we'll need some grocery shopping done, and then the kids will be nagging me to go to the beach. But we'll be 'home' and it won't feel like someone left the oven door open. So that''s something to get excited about!
