Scene & Heard | MAY 2019

21/05/2019

Welcome to our first edition of Scene & Heard with contributions from the whole team! If you’re new to our space in the blogosphere, welcome to our humble online abode. As the name suggests, this regular feature is about cool new things we’ve spotted on the scene or interesting titbits we’ve come to hear of. Either way, we’ve got you covered from all perspectives. Some of the information may seem entirely random, but trust us, if we’ve included it on this feature, it’s something we think you need to know about. Also, we’ve updated our About page to include and introduce the whole crew.

My mom turned 70 on 30 April and I was unfortunately not able to be there to celebrate with her (although we will definitely be having a celebration when I get home in July). I realised a little too last minute that I hadn’t yet arranged the special gift I had in mind for her but the lovely Nick at Moxie Jewellery really came to my rescue when I contacted him with my slightly panicked request. My mom received a beautiful gold necklace of the most exquisitely delicate minimalist design, engraved with the names of her four grandchildren. Moxie ships to Dubai and I’ve already placed my next order. Awaiting my earrings!

The hubby and kids spoilt me with a FitBit Versa for Mother’s Day and having never owned one of these fitness tracking type gadgets before, I’ve had to do a bit of homework on how to actually use it. Shocking, I know. I’ve discovered that this tiny digital ‘watch’ has all sorts of awesome features, including the ability to store music, which has lead me on a search for bluetooth headphones. As it happens, I was already on the hunt for a stylish portable speaker to use at our holiday home in South Africa this summer, and something new in the market – that ticks both boxes – has definitely caught my eye.

Have you guys seen the new Beoplay 2019 collection from Bang & Olufsen? Oh my goodness, it’s all kinds minimalist beauty with a generous side of zen. And whilst I know that the audio quality should be the first priority in this arena, I’m all about the aesthetics – and in this case, I’m hooked. With this particular brand however, there’s no need to even question the fact that stylish looks will be accompanied by impeccable sound quality. I think I may need the headphones and the portable speaker!

Lastly, I discovered this smart little award-winning gadget online – the Little Bishop pendant light hook is smart and sleek solution to an age decorating old problem. Check it out!

I’m sure you are very familiar with our little team mascot, baby Mila who belongs to Marli. This little tot is always making us feel under-dressed in the office with her superfly outfits and accessories. And Marli, who’s always on the lookout for cute things for her, is becoming quite the authority on what’s hot in this arena. She recently came across Little Kindred, the sweetest South African brand that stocks handmade bonnets, bibs and bows. Obviously Mila’s already sporting some of their adorable accessories. Check out the stinkin’ cute pics of our office cherub below.

Another adorable find on Marli’s radar is the British based brand Little Daisy Dot, gorgeous 100% cotton headbands made in a variety of colours and prints. And the beautiful packaging makes it even perfect for a gift. She says you are sure to have a hard time choosing.

Charly had an amazing family vacation in South Africa last month and as the only non-South African on the team, she had plenty of tips and advice thrown her way from the rest of us. After her whistle-stop tour of the Cape and KZN, she’s back in the sandpit raving about her safari experience at Bayala Private Safari Lodge. From her pictures and stories, we’re all in agreement that they had some serious beginners luck in the bush, ticking off several ‘big five’ viewings during their four day stay, which included not one, but two lion kills! I mean, seriously.

She and her family also got to spend some time at #HawkesHolidayHome in Salt Rock. After being on the receiving end of all my remote renovation efforts (and rants) last year, she probably felt like she had lived through it herself and it was awesome for her to see it all first hand. For a visit to Cape Town, she highly recommends Cloud 9 Boutique Hotel in Tamboerskloof for fabulous mountain views and great accommodation and awesome breakfast, lunch and dinner spots within easy walking distance. And she says that if you’re are there over a weekend, do as the locals do with a visit to Oranjezicht City Farm Market.

Charly highly recommends the Chefs Warehouse at Maison in Franschoek where a booking is required well in advance, although the Kleine Zalze Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, with the amaaazing restaurant “Terroir” was the culinary highlight for them. Overall, I think it’s safe to say that Charly has been bitten by the South Africa Bug and is already planning their next trip

It’s a wonder we get anything done around here because Britt is also just back from a holiday in New York City, that she said can only be  summed up as pure magic. The city, the lights, the vibe, the food – it all seems to have been love at first sight for her – but as a self-confessed art nerd, what she’s really come back in awe of is the galleries. Located in a building that she’s been utterly obsessed with since learning about it in her high school art class, The Guggenheim Museum has her top ranking. Designed by her all time favourite architect Frank Lloyd Wright, she says she can’t help but love this building that begins to appear out of nowhere as you are walking along central park and 5th Avenue. The pure architectural genius of it is unexplainable and seeing it has made her entire year. So that’s a major bucket list item ticked off for one of the team this month. Britt and her hubby happened to be in town during the MET gala event and spotted Alec Baldwin casually walking down Madison Avenue.

And that’s all from us for now,
Team HOH X

Kathryn Hawkes

    • It's been a pretty slow weekend here. Hope yours has been chilled too?
    • On the blog this week, we are sharing some of our favourite digital art resources. During these times of restricted movement, it's more convenient than ever to be able to purchase artwork that can be downloaded, sent to print and frame via online framing specialists like @draftframes and delivered to your door. I'm all about the convenience factor here! Link in bio for some of our go-to's

    • My Fronteriors co-founder, @liveloudgirl and I are going to be hosting a live Q&A session over on the @fronteriors account this Sunday. If you've got any burning questions for us - about anything from which IKEA frames we use, our suggestions for hacking your way to a unique furniture piece, to new designs or just something random you might like to know? Join us on Sunday, 24 May at 4pm UAE time.

    • I've been thinking about all the kids rooms we've designed and installed over the past few years, many of which had desks included. Unless they're kids in senior school, I usually view desks as a 'nice to have' addition if space allows. But I'm guessing those desks are getting a lot of mileage these days with Dubai schools continuing online learning until at least the end of the academic year. #crazytimes #stayhome #staysafe
    • A quiet afternoon was much needed to round off the weekend. Hope you all had a good one? Just peeking out on the left there is my new, improved @fronteriors Billy bookcase. More on that tomorrow.

    • She's been cursed with my coarse, wiry locks (that take 400 hrs to dry), if only I'd been blessed with that gorgeous colour. Suddenly wondering why I've never tried it. #hmm #maybe
    • I'm out of the house and in someone else's home and its feeling like a big adventure after so many weeks amidst the same walls. We are finally starting to install the spaces we've designed for a family villa that we've been working on remotely for several weeks. Installation days are not what they used to be for us. This one is happening over a number of days. Fewer handymen and painters on site, masks, a safe distance and a whole lot of handwashing. Its feels strange but its definitely a step in the right direction.
    • The kitchen. It's always been the heart of the home, but over the past two months, it's been more of a command central in the home. All the cooking, baking, copious tea and coffee-making, school planning, live lesson participating, news watching (we have a TV room to the left), snack foraging.... you name it, it's been happening right here.

    • If you'd told me a few months ago that I'd spend 8 straight weeks within the confines of my home, leaving only a handful of times for essentials, I'd have laughed out loud. And that's coming from a real homebody. Life sure is unpredictable.
